Eric, I didn't do clouds but faded my horizon from bottom to top making the bottom the lighter color. I did this by painting a two foot section of blue from the top down about two thirds of the way. Then paint from the bottom up into the blue white. While the paint is still wet use a large smooth sponge and work the white up into the blue and the blue down into the white a little. It should give you the light horizon that gets deeper blue as you look up. Then do another two foot section till you get to the other end. Should be some photos in my layout album. Oh, and make sure you use a flat finish paint or the light will reflect off it and when you take photos it will show the reflections, trust me I know!!!

Sounds like a good idea, what are your thoughts on trying an airbrush to get the horizon?

Probably doable but merging the white into the blue while they are wet makes a nice transition. Paint up a piece of scrap backdrop and practice on it both ways and see how it comes out.
